The perfect three-day itinerary in Stockholm, Sweden

Published on 26 March 2026 at 18:31

As I was trying to organize my trip to Stockholm, I was surprised that I couldn’t find very specific information about what to see in this city. The descriptions were a little vague, mentioning mostly neighborhoods. When I finally visited Stockholm, I realized that it is indeed difficult to describe exactly what to see because as you walk around many interesting places appear and it is hard to capture them all. I will try my best though!

Gamla Stan

The old city of the city is of course your number one stop during your stay and for a good reason. It is so beautiful to stroll around its narrow streets, its colorful buildings, eat and drink at its lovely cafes/bakeries, shop at its little souvenir shops and feel like you form part of a different era, like a trip in time. Of course, the way that you choose to explore this part of the city is a personal choice, but my favorite route is the following:

If you cross Riksbron bridge and pass in front of the Parliament, you can take the Västerlånggatan road, a traditional narrow street full of little shops, cafes and souvenirs, till you reach Mårten Trotzigs grand, the narrowest street in the Old City. Then you can continue to Österlånggatan street until you cross the impressive Statue of St. George and the dragon fighting. Another nice stop is also Sta Gertrud, Tyska kyrkan, a German old church that imposes the Old City. At the end of Österlånggatan street you have two options either to turn right and admire the view of the Royal Palace and the Gustav III Statue or to turn left towards the Gustav III’s Obelisk Statue, where you may visit the Royal Palace (or just admire it from its outside) and the Storkyrkan, this marvelous cathedral. And now comes for me the pinnacle of your visit to the old City: Stortorgsbrunnen, a charming square outside of the Nobel Museum with a lovely fountain surrounded by colorful buildings that create a magic atmosphere.

Norrmalm /Drottninggatan/ Sergels Torg Square

In my opinion, Norrmalm is one of the best neighborhoods you can choose to stay in Stockholm. It is close to everything on foot, and a very vivid place, full of restaurants, shopping malls, shops, souvenir shops etc. Drottninggatan is its main long shopping street that reaches Gamla Stan in only 15 minutes’ walk, while you have the opportunity to make all your shopping. The Homeless Fox Statue will definitely catch your attention.

Another place you can visit in this area is the square outside of the Konserthuset Stockholm full of lovely little flower shops, the Sergels Torg Square, practically the central square of Stockholm surrounded by malls and artistic places where you can hang around. (At Restaurant Kajsas Fisk I ate one of the yummiest salmons! (https://maps.app.goo.gl/L3689WbiJ9AFMgvJ7).

Mariaberget/Monteliusvägen

The most beautiful view of the city. You need to climb a lot of stairs to reach this point, but you may also take a bus which will take you nearer and with minimum effort you may enjoy the great view. If you visit Stockholm during winter (as I did), the view is even more impressive as you may watch people walking on the iced water!

Archipelago Cruise

The boat tour I did to the City’s archipelago is certainly one of the most unique experiences of my life as I had the opportunity to be on an icebreaker boat and actually feel the ice water breaking. The landscape was incredibly beautiful and absolutely astonishing. You also have great views of all important landmarks (like the popular Vasa Museum, the Abba Museum, the Fotografiska Museum, Katarina Sofia Cathedral etc). I cannot recommend more this activity especially during winter. https://www.getyourguide.com/en-gb/stockholm-l50/stockholm-archipelago-sightseeing-tour-t33191/

Östermalms Food Hall

Another interesting neighborhood to go around and explore is Ostermalms where this yummy food hall is located. You can taste different local products or sit and enjoy a light meal which will amaze you.

Strömkajen/ Skeppsholmen Viewpoint

If you have time to explore the city more, this is another route to walk around that I totally recommend. From Strömkajen, opposite the National Museum you can cross Skeppsholmsbron Bridge and go around until you reach Skeppsholmen Viewpoint. From all this part you have great views of Gamla Stan, the Royal Palace and from the other side the popular Vasa Museum.
