Macau is a lot more than a casino heaven or hell (depending on your luck); it is an incredibly interesting mix of European (and specifically Portuguese) characteristics with Asian culture. That makes it an ideal day trip from Hong Kong either you choose to go by boat or bus by crossing the 55-kilometer bridge that connects them.
Municipal Affairs Bureau/Senado Square
The most centrical part of the city where you have the impression of being in Portugal (which comes as no real surprise since Macau was under Portuguese territory until 1999). Colorful Buildings, typical Portuguese architecture, mosaic tiles form a unique feeling as you stroll around this pedestrian part (when I sent pictures from Macau to my friends, they were wondering how from Hong Kong I ended up in Portugal).
St. Dominic's Church
St. Dominic’s Church is a typical wonderful example of Baroque-style church that you cannot miss. It is one of the most popular spots in the center, surrounded by many little stores for shopping and for of course the popular custard tart desserts (pasteis de nata). To be honest there is no comparison with the ones in Portugal but in any case, who could ever resist a pasteis de nata?
R. De Sao Paolo/ Ruins of Saint Paul's
De Sao Paolo is a very busy pedestrian road in the center of the city. Usually, it can get very crowed as it leads to the impressive Ruins of Saint Paul’s which is a must, during your stay in Macau. The road itself is full of stores for souvenirs, desserts, groceries that you could also try before buying.
R. da Felicidade
Another popular pedestrian street with little colorful lanterns and full of cute stores, also worths a visit. There are nice tea stores where you can have a rest before continuing your tour in town
Casino Lisboa
There is no way that you will miss this casino hotel as it is literally HUGE and luxurious or even kitsch for some people. It is visible from any corner of Macau, and its interior is also impressive. From this region the casino territory begins. Especially during the night, you feel like being in Las Vegas. If you are fascinated by neon lights and the excitement of the casino scene, you’ll find this part of Macau captivating.
