A Two-Day Guide to Rotorua

A very popular destination of New Zealand’s North Island is this small city around four hours by bus from Auckland. Lots of day trips are organized from Auckland, but Rotorua is worth some nights to spend at it. It is traditional, full of Māori Culture and breathtaking geothermal sights.

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland

An eerie location, a geothermal park 20 minutes from Rotorua´s city center and a must visit during your stay. If hell has an entrance, I am sure that it would look like this. I loved the uniqueness of this place; colorful geothermal pools, geysers and mud pools are among the spots that you have the opportunity to gaze at the park.

Once more if you don’t drive you will need a half-day tour as there is not sufficient transportation. I booked this one which I totally recommend (https://book.rotoruanz.com/waiotapu-shuttle). Alternatively for any information or tour in the town you can always ask Rotorua isite Visitor Information Centre in the center of the city with its polite staff always available to assist you with your plans.

Polynesian Spa

This spa is heavenly made. It is a relaxation dream and maybe one of the few reasons that could make me visit New Zealand again! I chose the Deluxe Lake Spa, and I couldn’t recommend it more (of course they are other options too https://www.polynesianspa.co.nz/bathing/deluxe-lake-spa/ ). Six mineral water pools with different water temperatures (from 36–41°C and a cold one where I didn’t dare to enter) and stunning views of lake Rotorua. Just Amazing!

Tutanekai Street/ Eat Streat

As I already mentioned, Rotorua is a very small but lovely city. The most centrical street or where all the city’s action occurs is Tutanekai Street full of nice souvenir shops (the Māori necklaces are a must buy – each symbol represents something different depending on your needs). At the end of Tutanekai Street, is located the Eat Streat with many many international food options. Speaking about food I loved the Japanese restaurant Yamato Japanese Restaurant (https://maps.app.goo.gl/y3LwqVybXfxogcDZ6) and the lovely Boasters Coffee House and Roastery (https://maps.app.goo.gl/G3L41nAs8fUwna4V9).

Government Gardens

Last but not least, the Government Gardens, a tranquil place to have a walk among the gardens next to the lake and relax. There are also unique Māori sculptures that you could admire.
