Spending Two Days in Auckland

Published on 20 January 2026 at 19:22

When I recall all the landscapes that I visited in New Zealand, I think that they are uniquely beautiful and give the feeling of being in an isolated different world.

Nevertheless, if I had to evaluate the whole taste that the country left me, I would say that it is paradise for those loving wild nature, but for those that prefer a combination of organized city life and nature, it might be quite challenging, especially when you don’t drive.

Even though the country asks a tax of around 60 euros for tourist infrastructures when applying for your visa- guess what- there are not many tourist infrastructures. Of course, there is transportation in the city center but if you wish to go to another place by bus, there are few itineraries during the day or only one. That practically means that if you wish to do a day trip for example, there could be a public bus to take you to the city that you wish but it might not be a bus to take you back the same day. So, you are kind of trapped unless you book day tours that are quite expensive. If you drive, you will not face such transportation difficulties though, but only traffic problems especially during rush hours. In Auckland the traffic was a nightmare during mornings and evenings since due to lack of proper transportation (I suppose), everyone has a car which comes as a shock if you consider that it is a country that protects firmly its environment.

Another problem is the weather, that could change every five minutes. Seriously you can experience all seasons on the same day. It is crazy and a little tiring to be honest.

Ok it is now time to stop complaining about the things that I didn’t like about New Zealand and focus on the amazing and unique ones that the country offers.Auckland, the former capital of the country, located on the North Island is a good base to begin your trip, especially if you are a fan of Lord of the Rings. Let’s discover the city’s most beautiful sights, as well as some ideal day trips to complement your stay.

Viaduct Harbour

In my opinion, this is the best spot to visit when in Auckland. You have the best view of the SkyTower and the City’s Skyline and many gastronomic options as the area is full of restaurants and bars. Quay str next to the port is perfect for a walk. Make a stop at Ok Gift Shop (https://maps.app.goo.gl/eF858JTUUsVpbXZz5) with innumerous interesting souvenir choices (I bought a lovely passport case).

Te Komititanga Square

A lovely square that houses the central train station (Waitemata Train Station), surrounded by malls, all kinds of stores, restaurants, cafes (talking about coffee I would like to mention that coffee shops used to close at 3pm and Starbucks at 6pm. If you want to have a coffee (or my favorite milk tea with spices) after 6pm, you will probably be disappointed. The good news is that there are literally in every corner 24h markets where you could find a coffee substitute or alcohol to alleviate the frustration of not having coffee).

Sky Tower

The city´s most popular landmark, visible from almost all areas is a must visit during your stay in Aukland. From its top you have a breathtaking 360-degree view of the whole city.

Ponsonby Rd

This whole area, around 15 minutes from the city center by bus, is full of gorgeous buildings (I got impressed that the most stunning ones were clinics -mostly eye and dental ones), nice stores, pubs and different types of cuisine restaurants.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Its location on the top of a cliff is unique along with its stunning building. If you are interested in history this is the right place for you. However, this was not the reason that I visited it. The indigenous Polynesian culture of New Zealand, Māori is alive and kicking in the country and watching a Māori performance, getting to know their culture is a must. There are many villages offering a complete (usually three hours) experience of Māori culture, especially in Rotorua but they are quite expensive. So, if you want to be familiar with Māori culture but on a budget, the Auckland War Memorial Musuem is the ideal for you as there are two daily Māori culture performances (https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/visit/whats-on/maori/maori-cultural-experience).

Rainbow Bridge/Karangahape Road

It had just stopped raining and the colors of this bridge at the beginning of Karangahape Road were indeed like a rainbow. The whole street was full of stores and mostly Asian restaurants.

Whatever Sign

A colorful illuminated sign with the word WHATEVER at Cook Street (https://maps.app.goo.gl/SwMBBsefYFJRomto6) reflects the city’s mood. Whatever!
